Why Not Try Parenting Books?
If you want to have children, it is important to put a lot of thought into it. A lot of parents dive into it without really coming up with an approach that they can use across the board. They sort of figure that they will handle problems as they crop up, not understanding how difficult it is going to be for them to raise a child. Some parents I know refuse to read parenting books because they feel they can handle it on their own. In my opinion, they are missing the point of books on parenting. It is not like you should follow a parenting book like it is a recipe. Rather, these books provide you with an opportunity to consider different attitudes and approaches to how to raise a child and decide which one is the best.
Some parenting books have a very discipline-oriented approach. They believe that the best parent is the one who sets firm boundaries and rigid roles. Others advocate just the opposite approach. For them, the most important thing is to raise a kid who thinks and questions, not one who obeys blindly. Whether you want an obedient kid or a clear-thinking kid, both of these approaches have their place. Sometimes it is important to set firm boundaries for kids, other times it is important to let them open up for themselves and explore on their own. Kids who are too sheltered have to grow so quickly as soon as they leave the house that they can often run into serious troubles. Kids that are not given enough boundaries, however, do not always internalize morals or a sense of discipline quite as well. Like most things, it is a balancing act.
It is important to look at parenting books with a more narrow focus sometimes. Books on parenting that emphasize an overall philosophy sometimes leave out the importance of helping your child develop one stage at a time. For example, there is no point in talking too much about the teenage years when you have a newborn. Sometimes it is a good idea to let things happen as they do, without needing to find out everything way ahead of time. Just knowing how to raise a baby is enough for the first few years. After that, you can think about the rest of your approach. Raising a child is a long road to travel, and you can not expect to do everything at once.
