What Is Successful Parenting?

We all have different ideas of what successful parenting really means. Some feel that if their children have lived to the age of 18 and then moved out, they have done all that they can do. Others feel that they have not done a good job unless their children did well in school and have gone on to a good college. Everyone else falls somewhere in between. If you think you have done a good job because your teenager has not done drugs, is not failing in school, and is not pregnant, you may be on to something. Success in these areas is all about perspective.

You may even view successful parenting by where you live. If you live in a rural area, you do not have as much to think about as someone who lives in the middle of a large city. Donít make the mistake of thinking that drugs and pregnancy are not an issue if you live in a small town though. In fact, they can be just as problematic because children are bored. Successful parenting means keeping them away from those drugs, away from alcohol, and having them stay in school. Not being or getting someone else pregnant is also a good goal.

You can start successful parenting when your children are young. You may have no idea what to do, but you should always listen to your instincts. You are going to go through a period where all you say is ëNo,í but that will not last forever. You will learn when to stop your child, and when to let them explore. This gives them freedom and boundaries, and leaves them feeling as if they are important. That feeling does more towards successful parenting in the future than you may realize.

Before the age of ten, successful parenting means setting the boundaries that are going to take them through life. This is the prime time to show them what you think is right and what you think is wrong. You do this by example and by having talks with them about things that concern you. Donít worry, the right time to do this will come up, even when you fear you are going to mess the conversation up. Kids are not going to forget what you say, even if you say it in an awkward way. It may not stop some things, but it does give them pause when they are considering what to do in any situation.

As long as you pay attention to your children, you wonít have to worry too much about successful parenting. That is because you will know what to do. If not, you can rely on friends and family for advice, even if you donít use it. There are many great books out there on successful parenting that you can use as a guide. You may have to go through a few to find the one that fits in best with your parenting styles.
