Tools For Independent Film Making

At one time or another, everyone wants to try their hand at writing, music, acting, or some other creative field. Though this is popular, not everyone has the creative gene they need to excel or succeed. That does not mean you should not try something if you feel the urge, and that also does not mean you have to be successful you just have to have fun doing it. One thing that some like to try is independent film making. There are a few things you are going to need for this endeavor but they do not have to cost you a fortune. Just know you will have to put something into it.

You obviously need a camera or two for independent film making. You may have seen two and three camera set ups for filming, but one is really all that you need. You just have to do better planning and shoot the same scene more than once. That takes more time but it does save you from buying more cameras. You can find a decent high definition camcorder for your endeavor if you wish, or you can buy a film camera at considerably more expense. Do what your budget allows, but know that both will work out just fine despite quality issues with the camcorder vs the film.

You also have to have a good program for editing when you go into independent film making. You can get software for your home computer for a little over a hundred bucks retail, or you can go out and get more expensive editing equipment. If you shoot in film, that costs more, and it costs more in editing too. You may find that editing real film is actually easier in many ways, but that does not mean that you have the time to do this. Get the proper editing software or equipment for whatever type of visual medium you have chosen.

There is something you need for independent film making that you really can not buy from any store. You have to have a good story to tell. Yes, it is true that there are people that write and then sell, but if you really want to be satisfied with your project, it should be something that you have worked on on your own. It should be something from your heart that makes you feel ready to move forward and excited about what you are creating. You can buy a script from someone else, but you can not buy the enthusiasm that goes with working on something from your own mind.

Make sure you find help after you have gotten the main tools for independent film making. If you do not know how to run the equipment, find someone who does. Not all cameras come with good sound recording, so you may also have to buy something for that and also find someone who knows how to make the most of recording natural sound. There are going to be other small costs besides these items and the film/tape you need. Take you time and take it slow if you have a small budget and do what you can when you can. There is always time to get it done but don’t take forever.
