Tips for Decorating Walls

People find that decorating walls is the easiest and most cost effective way to transform a room. Rather than buying new furniture or lamps or rugs, painting a wall can make a room look fresher and newer while implementing a whole new style. Technology allows people to literally have the color of anything mixed for them. You can bring an apple to a paint store and the mixer will be able to produce a paint color that matches perfectly. This can now be done at big box stores and hardware stores so that people can redecorate walls affordably even after buying primer to cover whatever paint already exists. Commonly, wallpaper also has to be removed and the tools for doing so can be found in these stores as well.

Sometimes, people will try to find a color that is more neutral so that they will be happy with it for years to come instead of a bolder or brighter color that may be hard to eventually find new furniture or accessories for.

There are various paint methods used to help people personalize when decorating walls. I have seen walls that have been sponge painted, creating a two-tone whimsical effect. Sometimes painters will crinkle a plastic bag, dip in paint and then will glide in over the walls, creating angular wisps. Another method is dipping a feather duster in paint instead of a paintbrush and painting erratically. More structured designs include painting stripes on the walls or painting one wall a different color to add dimension to a room.

Another way to add pizzazz to walls is to find fabric or a colorful tapestry to attach to walls. This can be easily changed out and can hide any imperfections the walls may have. The fabric can be stapled to the top and bottom of the wall, or tiny hooks can be attached to the top of the wall to hang the fabric from.

There are also many wall hangings available in thrift stores, big box stores, design stores, specialty stores or online to help spruce up a room. Paintings, portraits, candle holders, sconces, plants, screens and posters can help create focal points on the walls. Sometimes, people will hire a muralist to create a sweeping painting that is very personal to the people who own the walls. Since decorating walls depends so much on personal ideas and taste, people take on the task themselves very often and find a creative side that suits them.
