Low Carb Cooking

As a nutritionist, I am constantly subjected to questions about low carb fad diets. Do not get me wrong, eating from a low carb menu can be very healthy for many people. The most healthy diets, in fact, completely eliminate potatoes and refined carbohydrates, balancing out any carbs gained from vegetables with fiber. It is easy to come up with low carb recipes for these diets any vegan, vegetarian, or mostly vegetarian cookbook will have dozens of them. Coming up with low carb diet menus for some of the more extreme weight-loss plans, such as the Atkins diet or the South Beach diet, is much more difficult. These diets will make you lose weight quickly, but not without causing major strain on your body and major unhappiness in your taste buds.

You see, low carb cooking means different things to different people. It all comes down to whether you desire to establish a safe and healthy lifestyle for yourself, or simply to lose a lot of weight quickly. low carb cooking for the former is pretty easy. It is true that when you switch to a less processed, more vegetable intensive diet, you will initially crave carbohydrates. Once you get past this, however, you will learn to enjoy the fresh and varied tastes of fruits and vegetables. low carb cooking for those fad diets, however, is a much bigger challenge. Just coming up with something that will not clog your arteries can be difficult, and coming up with recipes that will not start to make you nauseous after a few weeks of completely eliminating carbohydrates is almost impossible.

This is why so many people on the Atkins diet completely give up low carb cooking. There is nothing you can cook! A low carb breakfast consists, day after day, of fatty meats, omelettes with few vegetables, and the like. A low carb dinner can be something exciting like a steak, but after eating nothing but meat for a couple weeks, you will cringe at the sight of formerly delicious meals. Personally, I always recommend to my clients to give up these lose weight fast diets and stick with some traditional low carb cooking. Brown rice, vegetables, and a little bit of lean meat are all you need for a delicious meal that is low in carbohydrates. Sure you will not drop pounds quite as quickly as on the Atkins diet, but you will still see yourself losing weight rather quickly.
