Children may need a comfort blanket to cheer them and to give reassurance but people of all ages need comfort food from time to time. Recipes for comfort food are even more important in areas where the weather is cold and harsh. They tend to be traditional dishes, handed down from generation to generation. Whether they are home made or bought in a store, this kind of food is always welcome.

Everyone has their personal favorites but a comfort food recipe is often bulky food that fills you up, such as a stew, casserole or soup filled with vegetables. When the wind is howling or you have just struggled to get home in the snow, a light snack will not do! The British are also very fond of curry and Asian restaurants and take out are a great source of comfort food recipes. In fact, the winner in a poll of Best British Dish was Chicken Tikka Masala! Fish and Chips is an older tradition and every high street has one or more fish and chips shops with mainly haddock or cod, fried in batter. Of course, the universal choice of comfort food recipes is chocolate. In all its forms, it never fails to please, whether in a pudding, a hot chocolate drink or just on its own. Chicken Soup too seems to cross borders and is often given to invalids and people convalescing from illness because it is nourishing and easy to digest.

In the US, chocolate brownies and cheesecake does the trick. Also, ice cream is often resorted to in order to mend a broken heart! The smell of home baked apple pie reminds everyone of growing up. Macaroni Cheese, using Elbow Macaroni and Cheddar Cheese Sauce baked in the oven, is another popular comfort food recipe. Peanut Butter can bring solace in oh so many ways, as Peanut Butter fudge, butter, or cookies. There is also Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce, Peanut Butter and Banana Pie, and Peanut Butter Bread. Elvis Presley was famous for his love of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches.

Nowhere has harsher winters than Russia and they deserve a bit of comfort food. Khachapuri is a Russian style pizza with a topping of feta cheese, mozzarella cheese, butter and two sunny side up eggs. Enough to beat that Arctic blast.
