How Do You Fertilize Shrub Roses?

Fertilizing Shrub Roses

Typically, shrub type roses should be grown fairly slowly and bushy. Basically this means that very little fertilizer is needed. Use an organic mulch yearly with compost and well rotted manure and that should do you fine.

When fertilizing shrub roses, if you should prefer to use a chemical, one half dose of a granular balanced fertilizer in the spring season will be sufficient.

Don’t fertilize shrub roses in the first year!

One important point to remember when fertilizing shrub roses is that it should be avoided in the first year. The rose shrubs will find plenty of nutrients in the soil and this will avoid burning the new roots which could actually slow their growth.
