How Do I Propagate A Rose From A Cutting?

Rooting Rose Cuttings

Do you need step by step instructions on how to propagate roses from cuttings?  Here’s how:

1. Firstly, prepare the rose cuttings by cutting the rose stems into pieces with four leaf nodes, start by removing the two bottom leaves making sure that you leave the two leaves intact at the top end of the cutting.

2. Next, insert the bottom cut of the rose in rooting hormone if it is available (optional).

3. Insert the rose cutting in to a moist and sterile potting mix.  The two bottom leaf nodes should be completely covered in potting mix.

4. Now cover the container with a clear plastic to create a greenhouse effect.  You could use an old aquarium which is inverted over the container or tray if you like as this works quite well.

5. Make sure you keep the rose cuttings under light for about 12-16 hours per day in a cool place.  Also make sure that you keep the potting mix moist but not too wet as you want the rose cuttings to root and not rot.

6. In winter, when the rose cuttings begin to produce new leaves (in winter), start removing the plastic covering.  They should be ready to pot up and plant the rose ready for the summer season.
