How Do I Fertilize Hybrid Tea Roses?

Fertilizing Hybrid Tea Roses

Hybrid tea roses grow quickly and rapidly and heavy feeders. Every year when you prune them, you are removing a good percentage of their previous year’s growth. Hybrid tea roses will need sufficient nutrients as they start to replace this growth during the next growing season.

Hybrid tea roses can be fed with granular fertilizer or liquid fertilizer. Make sure that you wait until they are growing before you feed them for the first time. Make sure that you use the dosage and the feeding frequency as recommended by the manufacturer.

Winter over hybrid teas

In winter, make sure you do not feed them until after 1 August. If you are growing your hybrid tea roses as annuals and have every intention to discard them at the end of the summer season, you can continue to feed them until the frost. To winter over, you will want the canes to harden and become woody. New growth on hybrid tea roses is not woody and will not survive the winter season. Hybrid teas should continue to produce new growth as long as you feed them while and get the summer sun. If you stop feeding them by August 1 and most of the canes will be Woody by the time they are frozen.
