There was a time when my reading habits were a problem for my husband and me. It was not that he minded me reading, not by any means, but the light would keep him awake. He got up early to work, but I didnít go into my job until a few hours later. That meant I could stay up a bit to read when he needed to be sleeping. I realized that I was keeping him from his sleep, so I went out to look at reading lamps. We have had peace in that area of our lives ever since.
The key to good reading lamps is to find ones that give you just enough light so that you donít have to strain your eyes, but low enough so that the person next to you can sleep without being disturbed. This is all subjective, of course, so be aware of your differences when you shop. Some people tolerate a lot of light when sleeping, and some can not sleep with any extra light. You can always use the traditional lamp sets you can buy for your bedroom, but many find these are too bright for use as a reading lamp. If you can find one of these that has three different settings, with the lowest being great for reading, that might be your answer. You can also find some night table lamps that have an adjustable lamp so that you can angle it in the right way. You can light your book without the light glaring in your partners eyes.
If you have a headboard on your bed, you may want to look at lamps for reading that can attach right to your headboard. These are great because you can remove them if you want to. Those that donít read all of the time love that feature. They usually come with an adjustable neck so that you can angle them as well. If you find these to be too bright, or any of your reading lamps are too bright, you may want to go out and find the softest light bulb you can find. That might be the answer to your problem.
