Can You Share The Remote Control?

As far as I see it, there are two types of men out there. One type has no problem handing over the remote control for the television, and the other wont let go. There is really nothing wrong with either type, as long as the wife is fine with it. Some women dont care about what is on television, or they watch what they want when their husbands are not home. However, there are times when this can actually be a huge problem in a marriage. Most men who wont give it up dont realize they are sending their wives the wrong message.

The remote control is a simple thing, but it causes huge issues at times. Some see it as a matter of being considerate of the other person. This used to be a problem for me and my husband, but after time, I have learned to live with it. He is a flipper and I am a watcher. That means when he is flipping, he stops long enough for me to get interested in the show, and then he moves on. This can be very frustrating, and I thought he was doing this to make me mad. As it turned out, he had no idea. Since then, all I have to do is say something and he will put down the remote control when I say I want to watch the rest of a program.

Dont get me wrong, the remote control issue can go the other way around. Some women take control and they dont realize what they are doing. It can go both ways. The point is that the person who is hogging the remote control, and not asking the other if they are watching something, is usually not doing it intentionally. Some just naturally assume that you arent watching, or you dont care about it too much. When this happens, the best thing to do is to speak up and let the other person know they are a bit out of bounds. Just remember to talk about it, not fight about it, and the problem can be easily fixed with compromise.

Today, the problems with the remote control are not as big as they used to be. This is because of digital recorders like Tivo and the ones that come with some cable and satellite television services. This allows any show to be recorded while someone else is watching live shows on TV. The only problem here is deciding who will watch live and who will record to watch it later. This might become the next big struggle with the remote control.
