It is known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT; you can break that mouthful down too: the cognitive part deals with helping you find out how your mind thinks and works, and the behavioral part deals with helping you change some of the destructive behavior. Treatment lasts for about three months and can sometimes be conducted in groups like they do at Alcoholics Anonymous. Anxiety disorder treatment usually begins with an explanation of how the sufferer can gradually understand that nothing actually goes wrong the way their fears threaten. They are asked to immerse themselves in the situations they fear; a person with a social anxiety disorder can be asked to sit through just such a situation under controlled circumstances for example; a person with panic disorder may be asked to take control with baby steps into situations that excite panic: exposure therapy of the kind Meg Ryan goes through with her fear of flight in the movie French Kiss.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy does not force anyone into confronting any fears; anyone who suffers from anxiety will be explained the value of slowly facing a fear, and with their permission, will be gently eased into the feared situation with all the tools they need: breathing exercises, meditation techniques and lots of homework between sessions. It is often seen that the effects of such anxiety disorder treatment can last a whole lot longer than the effects of medication. A relapse can be treated with more of the same treatment too.
If all of this sounds pretty expensive, it is; but the good news is that alternative anxiety disorder treatment is not really experimental that your HMO or insurance plan would hesitate to cover.
