A Phobia of Phobia Treatment
Having fear of a certain object, situation or concept is normal, but you can call it a phobia when that fear is excessive and irrational. Most people hate spiders and freak out when they see one in their house, but someone with a phobia of spiders might not even enter a house that might have a spider in it and visibly tremble when they see one. Phobias can be so extreme to the point that people make big life changes to avoid contact with what they fear, which can interfere greatly with ones lifestyle.
A phobia is a kind of anxiety disorder that is possible to treat. If you have a phobia, you might think of seeking phobia treatment because its causing you a lot of problems. Some of us might have phobias of certain things, but we come into contact with those things so rarely that its not such a problem. For example, a phobia of shellfish isnt such a problem for someone who lives inland (though youd wonder how they developed that phobia then). On the other hand, a phobia of social situations is a really big problem since humans are social creatures and social interactions are a huge part of everyday life. A person with social phobia could go so far as to never leave home. If you phobia affects you to that extent, phobia treatment might be a good idea.
However, phobia treatment can be daunting because often it involves exposure to the thing that patients have a phobia of. One type of phobia treatment is flooding, in which the patient gets flooded with what they fear until they become desensitized to it. Understandably, many people with phobias find this prospect unbearable, so an alternative is building an anxiety hierarchy. The patient starts out by just talking about the phobia, then progresses to imagining it, and so on until at the end they are able to face what they fear. This gradual process sounds a lot more relieving than flooding, but again the idea that you would have to be exposed to the source of your fear is still too much for some people. Antidepressant medications are sometimes used as treatments for phobias, and there are other treatments like hypnotherapy that exist, but arent scientifically credible.
Maybe we could just prevent ourselves from developing phobias in the first place, but we dont know what well encounter in life. Thats why phobia treatment will always be an option, but it will usually take some courage on the patients part to overcome their fear.
